‘With a love interest, a gun, and a stash of fake cash in tow, the film
begins to echo familiar Hollywood tropes – codes of desire imprinted
onto the collective imagination. This performativity is heightened by
the intermittent, background presence of a real-life counterfeiter’s
masked voice, offering a mix of technical printing advice and related
philosophical musings, all set against an abrasive soundtrack that
disrupts rather than explains the visuals.
The camera constantly cuts to moments of intimacy between the two
main characters, something caught between the polished romance of a
movie and the raw reality of two people in a room; where it is unclear
where the acting ends and a real relationship begins. As such, it
borders on juvenile excess, but what lingers is not whether the events
are authentic, but whether the pursuit behind them is sincere. If
there is a genuine desire to reach something true through fabrication,
perhaps that is enough. Speculation – whether economic, emotional
or otherwise – is an unavoidable condition of contemporary life.’
